cute narwhal pattern

Do you love the Walden the narwhal design but don’t want to make such a big whale? Do you want a little narwhal to go with your big one? You are in luck! There is now a pattern for a little version of Walden!

This wee little Walden measures about 8 to 9 inches in length when using worsted weight yarn, from the ends of his tail fins to the tip of his horn. He can fit in your hand!

He is faster to make and uses up less yarn and stuffing than the original Walden – plus he is still super cute 🙂

So go hunting in your yarn stash and find some leftover yarn to whip yourself up a little narwhal (or whale!).

Meet Walden the narhwal!

Isn’t he a cutie? He can be a narwhal or a whale (you choose!). Using a heavy worsted weight yarn he measures 17 inches long (horn included), so he is nice and big and cuddly.

Don’t know a lot about narwhals? They are sometimes referred to as ‘the unicorns of the sea’ because males (and some females) have a distinct ‘horn’ on their head. This ‘horn’, or tusk, is in fact a large tooth that grows out through their upper lip. Narwhals live in the Arctic waters near Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Norway.

I have to say, designing this guy was a bit of a challenge. I decided early on that he needed to have a white belly, but this turned out to be tricky business. When working in the round without joining (ie. in a continuous spiral), your stitches shift slightly to the right with each round you crochet; because Walden’s belly is so long, I needed to make sure it did not look like it was going off to his side. It took a few trials (you should see the pile of whales I have in my living room) but I think it worked out well!
